This steeply sloping site is situated in the grounds of the former City Hospital, located close to the centre of this cathedral city. At the heart of the site lies the very fine Grade II listed late C18th ‘Royal Cornwall Infirmary’ building. The design approach involved a thorough Context Appraisal and extensive consultation both within the forum of a Project Working Group and with the local community.
The existing Grade II listed building is retained as the key feature at the heart of the site restoring its prominence as an important landmark for the city.
A previously lost original formal garden to the rear of The Infirmary building was reinstated through clever use of ground levels to conceal a large subterranean carpark from view. This modern version of the historic garden space also serves to set the new development away from the historic building providing ‘breathing space’ and restoring the original setting.
